Healthy, Safe Homemade Dog Treats

Why Homemade Treats?

The recent months were traumatic for some pet owners and stressful for nearly all pet owners. Some found out too late that the food and treats they fed their pets were killing them. Others scattered to find kibble that wasn't recalled or a close supplier of raw food. Then, they kept a close eye on their pet in the coming days to assure they remained healthy. Luckily, we were able to avoid the stress and heartache associated with those bad foods. Wouldn't it be nice to know exactly what you are feeding your pet?

You can partially control what your pet eats by making treats at home.

By making treats at home you know the production process is safe, the ingredients are pure, and the treats are made by a caring cook. They will contain no wheat gluten or melamine, the suspected source of contamination that started the recalls. Also, homemade treats can be just as tasty as the ones purchased from a store. Our boxers go crazy for our homemade liver treats. Why wouldn't you want to give your pet a delicious and safe treat?

We have included 3 simple treat recipes that are great for dogs. The ingredients include items from your cupboard and meat you can find at the grocery store. They are items that we could eat too. So, we know they are safe.

Liver Treats/Ring Bait

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Add slices to boiling water and after full boil begins again, boil for 5 minutes.
  2. Add garlic powder to the water so it is "flavored". (Only use tiny amounts for flavor.)
  3. After boiling for 5 minutes, remove the strips and put them on paper towels and let them air dry for about 10 minutes.
  4. Then place them on a cookie sheet with sides. Put liver into the oven for about an hour at 200 degrees. I like to turn the liver over and cook for an extra 30 minutes but not necessary.
  5. Leave liver in oven until it becomes dry and semi hard.
  6. Add more liver to the boiling water for the second batch.
  7. Keep doing this (adding water as needed) until there are enough treats to last a month or more. Keep on rotating to paper towels, then oven.
When the strips are semi soft, rub them between two paper towels to remove any seasonings attached from the water. If for bait just bag them up and freeze them for treats Slice them up to the bite size you want. Put back into the oven for about 5 minutes. After they have cooled, put enough in an aluminum foil or plastic baggie for a "session" and freeze. When ready to use try nuking them for about 10 seconds for a more appealing smell.

The leftover water/broth can be used as an extra treat pour over dogs dinner!!
